Kidderminster town council plan could be revived at special meeting

FUTURE plans to parish Kidderminster, which could see the return of proposals to create a town council, will be discussed at a meeting later this month.

District councillors have agreed a session should be held at Wyre Forest House on Wednesday, March 26, to consider a report due to be published by a working party set up last year when a review into creating a Kidderminster Town Council was abandoned.

The 10-member cross-party working group, chaired by Independent Community and Health Concern leader councillor Graham Balllinger, has met twice since last July - in November and January - and has looked at a number of options into the future of governance in Kidderminster.

According to a report put before all 42 Wyre Forest councillors at a meeting on Wednesday last week (Feb 26), the group has looked at both making no change from the current Charter Trustees and initiating another review into setting up a town council.

It said it would not be legally possible to parish Kidderminster without creating a town council because the area has more than 1,000 electors.

The group has also discussed creating a separate development trust and area planning committee and says district council policy could be changed so Wyre Forest's spending in the town on matters paid for elsewhere by parish councils - such as in Bewdley or Stourport - would be charged only to council taxpayers in Kidderminster.

No decisions have yet been made and none are likely to be at the March meeting as councillors will consider the working group's recommendations in public for the first time.

In July last year, the majority of councillors voted to abandon the long running town council project when results of a consultation found the public were against the proposal. The working group was set up following the decision to consider future options.

Is this really what we want our councillors to be wasting their/our tax funded time on instead of real and current issues?
One day they propose cutting allowances or reducing the number of councillors in order to bring down costs. The next they are talking about adding another carriage to the already lucrative gravy train on which they are non fee paying passengers.

OK but there is still a cost involved for creating another tier of local government even if it is as little as 1p per head of population. The duties of local government have been served well for many years by the current system.
We should be moving forward and reducing the tiers not adding or duplicating them.
Town & parish councils worked well in the 18th/19th centuries but times have changed and so should the local authority.
Use the council chamber time in better ways to improve the lives of your electorate.

Are you saying you will do it all at your own expense and the goodness of your heart. Me think not there has to be some perks in it for councilors.

Disgraceful. The previous charade was seen through by the public. Yet the politicians clearly know better. Such trivial demarcation of the community lends itself to unhealthy concerns about trusted shared space. Lets celebrate the Wyre Forest community rather than allow politicians to embark on their latest institutionalised myopic penny pinching idea that support their dependence on old recycled, reused and reduced political power bases.

Whatever is wrong with Graham Ballinger and the Healthy Party in Wyre Forest they all seem mental. I watched the Council Meeting last week and bar for a few works from Ballinger his group remained silent throughout the process. Never uttered a word on most of the items being debated all night. Then this week he’s calling for a working group to look at creating a town council for Kidderminster. We the Residents of Kidderminster said NO we don’t want one last year so why are they pushing this again? If the idea ever got off the ground would these faceless councillors who say nothing be standing for election? It really is a Joke that council cuts and job losses are being imposed and a few district councillors want to create another level of government. This town council could impose a tax on Kidderminster Residents on top of the District and County and Fire and Police charges we have now! It’s crazy. Can somebody not talk to these idiots and tell them the people of Kidderminster have had enough NO MORE TAXES!!!

It's not a could, but will. That's the price to pay for a town to embrace a town council. Ask the taxpayers of Stourport and Bewdley !!

What ever you may think Sladen54 Town and Parish Councillors do not receive an allowance so if you stand as one then you don't get paid. As you appear to think being a Councillor is so perk laden perhaps you could tell me what these perks are, I would be interested.
