A DAY care service in Kidderminster has celebrated 10 years of providing specialist care for elderly people with dementia.
Among Friends Kidderminster, based at the Fred Bennett Centre, has helped more than 200 people living with the brain condition since it opened in 2004.
An anniversary event took place on Tuesday, June 10, and saw clients, friends and family treated to champagne and nibbles.
The event was attended by more than 40 carers, service users and special guests, including Wyre Forest District Councillor Fran Oborski and Anne Hingley and Professor Dawn Brooker from the Association of Dementia Studies.
Professor Brooker said: “It is essential that our communities continue to support projects like Among Friends Kidderminster in providing friendship, love and meaningful company to help people and their carers living with dementia.”
In the three months leading up to the nature themed event, clients created an intricate butterfly mosaic, made butterfly bunting and planted flowers specifically chosen to attract local butterflies.
Fiona Fidoe, whose father has been attending the service since 2009, said “Among Friends Kidderminster is fantastic. The staff cannot do enough for my father.
“It has been a source of incredible support for him and for me - what more can I ask for?”
Originally known as Wyre Valley Day Club, the service was based in Gamson Close before moving to its current location in March 2010.
A part of national charity Friends of the Elderly, the service now caters for up to 16 people living with dementia and hosts activities such as life history groups, reminiscence fun groups, sporting memories and circle dancing.
Sam Arnold, service manager, said it was a tremendous privilege to be part of the service.
“I would like to thank the staff and volunteers for their motivation and care but most of all I would like to thank our members who attend as they make Among Friends Kidderminster very special,” he said.
“Over the past 10 years, the service has helped 214 people living with dementia, and I know that we will continue to grow and develop with the support of the community.”
