WARTIME Britain will come to life at Severn Valley Railway during two vintage weekends.

The Step Back to the 1940s events will feature historical cars, a military aeroplane and performances by re-enactment groups.

One of the world’s oldest wooden helter skelters - built in the early 1900s by Griffiths and Morgan of Shepherd’s Bush - will also entertain visitors as part of the Blackout Fair, a fairground with traditional rides.

Clare Gibbard, marketing and communications manager of Severn Valley Railway, said: “It is easy to see why our 1940s weekends are among our most popular events and this year’s Blackout Fair should really enhance the family fun element.

“Everyone involved is 100 per cent immersed in the spirit of the era, making for a truly memorable day out for all ages.”

The 16-mile stretch of railway from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth will be alive with wartime activities, performers and entertainers.

Replica air raid shelters and a World War II operations room will be on display, while a 1940s wedding will showcase the era’s clothing and culture.

A convoy of historic and military vehicles featuring the familiar faces of Sir Winston Churchill and General Montgomery will travel from Kidderminster to Arley and a special railway dining service will be available in the evening.

At Highley train enthusiasts will be able to see a genuine King George VI royal carriage, while at Arley a full-size replica Spitfire will be a star attraction.

Stalls selling 1940s memorabilia will also be on offer along the line, including Kemp Hospice's vintage sale, which has raised £12,000 over the pst three years.

The events will take place on Saturday and Sunday (June 28 and 29) and July 5 and 6.

A ceremony featuring flag bearers, veterans and re-enactors will close the weekend activities on each Sunday.
