WYRE Forest’s political leaders will call on Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to protect services at Kidderminster Hospital.

MP Mark Garnier rallied politicians to show a united response to the joint services review on the future of the county’s hospital provision.

Two options put forward by health service clinicians say Kidderminster Hospital could close.

Those attending a meeting last Friday included Labour’s Howard Martin, Liberal Fran Oborski, Independent Community and Health Concern’s Nigel Thomas, Independent Helen Dyke and Conservative Marcus Hart.

Earlier in the week, at a Wyre Forest District Council meeting, Labour and Conservative councillors accused each other of “politicising” the issue.

A motion put forward by Conservatives, which was eventually passed, said: “Council notes and understands the NHS must make efficiency savings”. But Labour members said they could not support it unless the “political statements” were deleted.

Friday’s meeting led by Mr Garnier agreed to push for the two restructuring options which would see one acute hospital with A&E, probably Worcestershire Royal, a hospital treatment centre, likely to be Kidderminster and Redditch’s Alexandra providing either an urgent care centre or planned surgery.

“Our next step is to write to [trust chief executive] Penny Venables to say we have got together and do not want to lose any services,” said Mr Garnier. “Overall, it was clear everyone was singing from the same hymn sheet.”

Mr Garnier came under fire, however, from Green Party spokesman Stephen Brown, for only inviting elected representatives to Friday’s meeting.

Mr Brown said: “It is a selective political group, chosen by the MP. I make an open offer to any and all to form some kind of steering group, with a nonpolitical approach, to work together.”

Mr Garnier said: “I will meet with everybody who has a view and will be having a conversation with [Mr Brown].

“Wyre Forest, as a community, has decided who it wants to represent it and these elected representatives were at the meeting.”
