Cyclone Aila

Posted on 10:01am Wednesday 27th May 2009

It has been a long time since I wrote anything. Blame nuns, or frequent power cuts in overcrowded cyber cafes ... blame the fact that I'm perpetually exhausted, and that there aren't the words to describe everthing I desire to share. I've been back in the City of Joy for over two months now, and my days continue to be filled with challenging, varied, and amazing experiences. None quite so blustery as Tuesday's cyclone which hit Kolkata with speeds of 120km/hr. I have never experienced or seen such devastation - at one point I was literally blown over, landing on my arse in a puddle of mud [one can only hope it was mud!]. Trees were uprooted, cables fell down, cars were swept away, and of course, many of the poorest of the poor not only lost their homes, but their lives. It is such a harsh climate - one moment you're baking in 43 degrees with 87% humidity, and the next you're drowning in muddy water. Debris was flung around the streets, and it was genuinely scary. Today we read that 200 have lost their lives in West Bengal, with the Sunderbans worst affected. Here in Kolkata we are clearing up the wreckage and back to the unbearable humidity we have become acclimatised to.

Incommunicado by DaTa

Posted on 2:37pm Saturday 23rd May 2009

I have been without the Internet for about three weeks so you have had a rest from my ramblings. What I have learned is just how much we now take for granted. When I were a lad we had the third car in the street, the third family to get a telephone (party line of course) and about the third or fourth to have a TV installed (for the Coronation, what else?). I remember the widespread use of Horse-drawn local deliveries (quick lad go get the shovel and spread that round your Ma’s roses).

Will They Never Understand?

Posted on 11:09am Friday 22nd May 2009

After all this fuss about MP,s expenses claims they still do not understand what it is all about. Just how thick are these grasping gits? In the latest answer to their greedy claims two of these bods are still saying they have done nothing wrong because what they did was just about within the rules.

The current debate upon funding television (and other broadcasting) is interesting but it is still skirting around the nub issues.
