In her Blog revealing plans to give 5-year olds Sex Education Primrose is so right. On balance I think 11-12 is about right. There certainly has to be a better way to learn the facts of life than the way I did, at 12, sitting out on the playing field at Stourport Secondary (as was) with four other lads, when Roger Morris declared “you stick your whatsit in her whatsit and wee”. Fortunately there were female friends able to explain the correct process before any disasters occurred.

The suggestion to appraise children as young as 5 of the facts of life is one more reason to call New Labour a ‘Baldrick’ party – full of ‘cunning plans’. I wouldn’t trust this lot to run a bath.

Restoring this country’s moral and ethical values will take far longer than they took to unravel.

There are those who will ask, “What is wrong with things as they are?” I have no answer for them because if the parlous state of British society is not self-evident to them then they are part of the problem.

The type of teacher who is happy to teach 5 year-old about sex ought probably to be on a sex offender’s list. Forget context and euphemisms this is a subject for 11-12 year olds.

The British high teen pregnancy rates are mainly caused by 1. The removal of ‘self respect’ from parents’ vocabulary.

2. Removal of the stigma of pregnancy sans-wedlock.

3. Provision of flats and benefits, actually rewarding pregnancy.

4. Substitution of ‘motherhood’ as a career option.

5. Failure by mothers to instil respect for women in their sons.

6. Alcohol abuse by the young.

They are certainly not caused by ignorance of the facts.

So, if we are to begin the climb toward correcting the situation, it is not sex which we need to teach but relationships, kindness, regard for the opposite sex and responsibilities.

Teachers need to be key players in this process but if you read my Blog ‘Seedy High School on Severn’ I don’t have a lot of confidence.

Thanks for your comment David re. sex education. As you suggested I read your previous blog-Seedy High School on Severn. To think I was complaining about Jamie Oliver's language, on his Ministry of Food programme. There's no competition there, is there? Primrose
