Primrose, I usually agree with just about every blog you post but I have to cross swords on this one as I agree entirely with the French when they say that the UK has caused this problem.
If you are to compare the benefits, freely given, to any immigrant who manages to set foot on British soil to that on offer in any other EU country it is little wonder that a huge problem has arisen. I am far from being a Francophile but their analysis is spot on.
What can be done? Well, seriously, there are 56,000 people who live in Greenland. Employment is very difficult, at most times the climate is fairly inhospitable. I would offer the Greenland Government the opportunity to construct a massive, UK funded transit camp with mega facilities, Schools, Medical, Cinema, Bowling, Gymnasia, every type of amenity plus an airport improvement scheme. Every single immigrant of any stripe would be offered a first class ticket home or a flight to the Greenland processing centre whilst their (usually spurious) claim was being processed by UK officials. They would never be imprisoned, always free to leave, always fed and comfortable but no benefits, no slipping off to blend into the illegal jobs market, no ‘can’t get a woman meets can’t get a passport’ arranged marriages.
Results? Fourfold – First the numbers repatriated rather than endure Greenland weather would soar. Second, word would get out and no blighter would want to come here anyway. Third, genuine Asylum Seekers would find that processing of their cases would accelerate, as the hard-pressed authorities caseloads would diminish. Fourthly, building and running the centre would boost Greenland’s economy. When the whole thing winds down Greenlanders would be left with a first rate asset for conferences such as the G20, (free from rentamob-ragtag-n-anarchy-on-benefits-anger-management-dropouts).
Win-Win-Win-Win.
All that is needed is the will to deal with the problem. Labour wants low-wage voting fodder and Tories want cheap labour so there is no imperative for either to address the issue.
