Quite a few people, some who should know better have castigated the Shuttle for publishing advertisements for the BNP.

They are wrong.

I agree with the saying, attributed to Voltaire, "I disagree with what you are saying but would defend, to the death, your right to say it"

The BNP has not been proscribed as an organisation; it is a properly organised political party and as such is entitled to advertise for people’s votes.

The answer to extremist parties is not to ban them or burn their pamphlets (the actions of totalitarian regimes) but simply to let them receive a derisory share of the vote at election time. If, as people fear, they get a councillor or two or a Euro MP then it is the fault of those who oppose them for failing to win the arguments and provide convincing warnings.

Much has been made of their ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ status, I would only point out that if being dishonest to the voters was a Capital offence there would be a lot of dead MPs right now.

From my comment that was reprinted in the paper you can judge I agree with you, but MPs dishonest? Tut tut, they're not dishonest; as they state over and over (and over and over) again 'Everything I did was within the rules'.

Anything else is just forgetfulness such as that you've finished off paying for a mortgage or you're unsure how many houses you own. Simple everyday memory slips like that.

The MP who 'forgot'his mortgage had been paid off stated on radio 4 that he was sorry for this one mistake. But, for the sake of accuracy he had been claiming for 17 months so it was, in fact, seventeen mistakes.

They print these comments in the paper now? My god I'd better buck my ideas up.

Anyway, back on topic, yes, the most disturbing of these attacks on the shuttle is rather disturbingly from a representative of the national union of journalists, I find it disturbing that a journalist is trying to restrict free speech.

Not to worry walkerno5 I think they only print the wisest and most pertinent of comments... oh wait one of yours was printed; bang goes that theory :-P

I missed seeing the letter from the NUJ until after posting here, but I agree any journalist who seems to be wanting to dictate to their readers is a most disturbing situation.

I don't know, printed in the free paper and I don't even get a copy... I'll have to track it down in the "e-edition" up above ^

Those of us who are white British borne and bred need to be aware of the real FEAR that the sight of those BNP adverts has caused to some members of our multi-racial community.
To a member of a minority community the fear of racial attacks can be very real and the knowledge that the peddlars of racism are becoming active in a community where people have lived happily for many years is causing some people real distress.

Fran, So you would ban the advert?

Fran what B-S..... I am "british born and bred" and i dont sence no fear whats so ever. You should know better regarding scarmongering. There is such a thing as free speech. BNP seem to be the only political party who suport "british born and breed" citizens. Instead of these MP's who claim ridiculous expence claims.

No one is denying that the BNP are entitled to free speech , though I for one would not defend to my death this particular groups right to free speech. The issue here as I see it simply concerns advertising revenue v moral judgements and I accept that sadly this may have no place in business. But The Shuttle could have refused to publish such an advert, it may have lost a few hundred pounds but would have gone up in mine and many others estimation.
