Tired of living in chaos? Nowhere to store all those new Christmas presents? Fortunately, help is at hand from leading house builder Taylor Wimpey who is offering some hints and tips to help people get their homes organised this New Year!

Thursday 14th January is National Organise Your Home Day – so it’s the perfect opportunity to clear out the clutter, get everything organised and make it easy to keep tidy in the future!

To mark the occasion, Taylor Wimpey is offering a handy step-by-step guide to help householders to get their homes in order: • Work through the house room by room – otherwise it will get overwhelming. Check each drawer and cupboard one at a time, and sort belongings into three piles: things you use, things you don’t use but want to keep (within reason!) and things you don’t want anymore.

• Keep the kids out of the way – you don’t want them to re-discover things they’ve not played with for ages and you’ve decided to get rid of!

• First, deal with the things you don’t want any more. If there are items that someone else might reasonably use then put it in the car boot to take to the charity shop. If it’s valuable, then you could think about selling on websites such as eBay, but be realistic – your time is limited! Recycle/throw away everything else.

• The next step is working out what to do with things you don’t use but want to keep. If you’re particularly sentimental, this might be a large pile, but depending on the amount of space in your house, you might have to be ruthless. Pack what you decide to keep into boxes and store in the loft or garage and get rid of everything else as above.

• When you’re only left with things you use, it all comes down to storage and easy access. Remember everything needs a home. Invest in some appropriately sized containers and label them clearly, so it’s easy to put things back after you’ve used them.

• Find an easy-to-access home for the most vital and regularly-used items first, with less-regularly used things – the Christmas wrapping paper, for example – on the out-of-reach shelves or at the back of the cupboard.

• Keep one box empty for all the miscellaneous junk you will find left lying around in future. When anyone asks where their precious bracelet/mini-figure/hairband has gone, it will be safely stored there – and you won’t have stepped on it several times in the meantime.

• Once the house is organised, the real challenge is to keep it like that! Put things away when you’ve finished with them and make sure everything’s tidy at the end of every day, so clutter doesn’t accumulate.

Taylor Wimpey’s brand new homes are carefully designed with plenty of storage space to make it easy to keep organised.
