TEX-Mex band Los Pacaminos feature one of Britain’s best-known singers but his talent is the tip of their iceberg.
The group formed in 1995 when Paul Young hooked up with musicians who perform with artist like Robbie Williams, Queen, Pete Townsend, Jools Holland and Roger Waters.
Our internet video crew had a Base Sessions chat with Paul about Los Pacaminos ahead of the band’s gig at The Robin 2 in Bilston.
The hit singer says the band formed “just for fun, playing simply for the pleasure of it” and took their name from a the term ‘pack ‘em in’ referring to audiences.
Paul added: “What’s really nice is that everyone else in the band can sing too, and they do, all in their own very different styles. It’s real bar room stuff, foot stompers, not too many slow songs – a real party atmosphere.”
Tex-Mex music draws on the Mariachi and Norteno styles of Mexico and the country/blues sounds of south-western America. with a sound inspired by artists like Ry Cooder, Los Lobos and Sir Douglas Quintet.
The band’s self-titled debut album out on What Records and distributed through ID/Universal and the Los Pacaminos will be on stage at the Robin 2, Mount Pleasant, on Friday February 18.
