Acclaimed society tackles G&S classic

MEMBERS of Stourport Choral and Operatic Society have been acclimatising to life aboard a pirate ship in preparation for their forthcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance.

Cast members were only too happy to take the opportunity of dressing up for the occasion on board the boat at the Stourport Riverside Amusement Park.

Gilbert & Sullivan's much-loved operetta revolves around policemen and pirates battling it out for supremacy, while the hero Frederic tries strenuously to escape the pirate band.

The plot revolves around Frederic's leap year birth date of February 29 and David Bell, who takes the role, only escaped this fate himself by a few hours, having been born on March 1.

Muriel Bell, David's mother, will play Ruth and they will have a number of comical scenarios to play-out together as the story unravels.

Trevor Hughes, who plays the major-general, explained: "It certainly makes for a right ding-dong' battle of wits between these two leading characters.

"Stourport Choral revel in this kind of production, which allows them to display both their significant musical and dramatic talents simultaneously.

"Their last production Jekyll and Hyde - The Musical was awarded the regional NODA award for best production of the year, a trophy they cherish as a testament to the dedication."

Their latest show will feature professional direction from Claire Worboys, following on from her success in the company's previous production, and musical direction from David Morgan.

The performances run from Tuesday to Saturday, 17 at Stourport Civic Centre and tickets are available from the Rose Theatre box office on 01562 743745. Curtain up is at 7.30 pm.

For more details about the show, call the box office or Phil Smith on 01299 822815.
