"THE national children’s dramatist" is returning to a Worcestershire theatre where he began his career as an actor and director back in 1967 for a special performance of David Wood’s Storytime.

In the year that Worcester's Swan Theatre celebrates its 50th birthday, this one-off performance will mark 50 years since David Wood first appeared on the theatre's stage – starring in the Oxford University revue, The Oxford Line, alongside a then unknown Michael Palin and Diana Quick, in what was the first ever professional performance at the city’s brand new home of the arts, the Swan Theatre.

The actor, author, and playwright will be storytelling a version of his much-loved play, book, and television series, The Gingerbread Man, as part of this year's Worcester Festival, on August 29.

Set on a Welsh Dresser and featuring Herr Von Cuckoo, Mr Salt, Miss Pepper, the Old (Tea) Bag, the ever-hungry Sleek the Mouse and, of course, The Gingerbread Man, David Wood’s Storytime is a storytelling show with magic, music and audience participation. David’s play The Gingerbread Man has played worldwide, from Birmingham to Beijing, and Torquay to Tokyo, and has completed nine London seasons.

Perhaps best-remembered from his BBC television performing days on Jackanory, Play Away and Tricky Business, David Wood OBE has enjoyed forty years of writing for children. His stage adaptations include Roald Dahl's The BFG, Fantastic Mr Fox and James And The Giant Peach, Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Dick King-Smith’s Babe, The Sheep-Pig, and Goodnight Mister Tom from Michelle Magorian’s classic novel, which won the Olivier Award 2013 for Best Entertainment and Family.

With David’s rare skill to captivate children and keep them spellbound throughout, this show promises to provide brilliant entertainment for young children and their families.

Tickets for the 11am show cost £7 for adults, £5 for children £5, of £20 for a family of four. To book, call the Worcester Live Box Office on 01905 611427.
