A MOTHER of five from Kidderminster is making a name for herself in the world of comedy after embarking on a university screenwriting course.

Kate Lane, 41, has sold a number of her sketches to The Treason Show in Brighton and to Radio Soundart, an arts-based station in South Devon.

She has also started to perform her own stand-up routines at comedy events, something she did not expect to be doing six months ago.

“I never dreamed that within the first year of my degree I would have sold some of my work and also be performing it,” she said. “It has just been absolutely wonderful and I’m loving every minute.”

Kate enrolled on the University of Worcester’s BA (Hons) screenwriting and film Studies course after attending an open day last year.

She explained: “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, other than I wanted to go to university.”

“When I heard about the screenwriting and film course I thought it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a go.

“I thought I would lean more towards the film studies but, even though that side of the course has been fabulous, it’s the screenwriting that has really captured my imagination.

“I had never done anything like this before but I just love it.”

Kate, who lives in Broadwaters with her five children, aged from 10 to 17, writes about her own life experiences as well as doing topical political pieces.

“If someone had told me six months ago that I would be up on stage performing stand up, I would never have believed them,” she added.

“This course has given me a whole new lease of life and new found confidence.

“ As part of the course we are advised to look for avenues to send our work, so I searched the internet, found some outlets and then just bombarded producers with my work.

“When it was taken up I couldn’t believe it. It is such a great feeling.

“The first time I saw my work being performed was incredible.”
