A KIDDERMINSTER social club will host its first Northern Soul and Motown Night tomorrow, with the iconic sounds heard in the early venues of the northern soul heyday.

The event will be held at the Gilt Edge Social Club, in Zortech Avenue, on Friday, April 3, from 8pm.

Craig Leonard, event organiser, said: “We will be using original equipment and records to re-create the sound and atmosphere of venues long gone, such as the Torch, the Catacombs and the Wheel.

“Following on the heels of a new northern soul film from Elaine Constantine, the music seems to have suddenly hit the mainstream media and television advertising.

“The scene was always seen as underground, but its classic appeal is reaching out to younger people who are following the music and hunting out the records from record shops like Mr T’s in Blackwell Street.”

Craig will also be the main DJ performing at the event, and will be joined by iconic guest DJs and those new to the scene.

Craig is one of the presenters on the future television programme ‘Strange Roots’, which is currently still in the editing stages, alongside his co-presenter Matt Harley. The programme covers the northern soul scene, the vintage scooter riders and the scooter rallys during the summer months.

Filming for the television show has been taking place over the last couple of years, and is expected to cover the new Gilt Edge venue later in the year.

Tickets are £3 per person or £5 per couple and are available on the door.
