A THEATRE group for people with learning and physical disabilities have held their eighth dance and drama production at the Rose Theatre in Kidderminster.

New Horizons Youth Arts Group performed A Birthday Humbug, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, to a packed audience.

Chairman of the group Jacqueline Hateley said: “It was fantastic. The people who work with the performers put in a lot of effort to get the best of them.

“They need a lot of support but once it gets in their head they’re brilliant. You wouldn’t believe how far they’ve come. It can help with their confidence issues and with their mobility and speech.”

The theatre company has been running for about 10 years with the help of volunteers.

Nineteen performers aged between 16 and early 30s took part in the show, led by Martin South who played Scrooge, and director Kim Archer wrote the script.

Jacqueline added: “Kim puts her own spin on it, it’s very much the group’s own production with dancing and singing.”

The group rehearses at Kidderminster Youth House and is funded by various group’s fundraising activities including the Monday Night Group in Stourport.

A recent change in secretary means that less funding bids have been applied for and the group is looking for more funding and sponsors to help their next production.
