THE Nonentities will be exploring the characters surrounding Oscar Wilde in their latest production at the Rose Theatre.

To Meet Oscar Wilde will be performed from Monday to Saturday, November 16.

The play will see ‘Oscar Wilde’ deliver a lecture in 1897 on his life, loves, triumphs and also his downfall as a result of the two disastrous trials he was subjected to in the Rose Theatre studio.

‘To meet Oscar Wilde’ was the note that Victorian Society hostesses would place on their invitations to tempt guest to their soirees.

Mr Wilde’s lecture will be supported by colourful characters, both friends and enemies, in a series of short scenes on a journey through Wilde’s life, from “the hottest author in town” to the darkest days in Reading Goal.

Audiences will learn a little more about the man behind the ego and of the importance of being true to yourself.

Full of wit, the play is also a moving, sympathetic and almost heart-breaking portrayal of the Irish playwright and his self-induced tragedy.

The attitudes the play highlights still resonate today, although the Nonentities’ judgement is less harsh than it was when first performed.

Tomorrow at the Rose Theatre, a tribute show to Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, entitled the Sounds of Simon, will be held by Table Nine.

The evening will feature songs such as Mrs Robinson, The Boxer, The Sounds of Silence and You Can Call me Al.
