LIVE theatre will be performed at Hartlebury Castle tomorrow (Friday, June 27).

Heartbreak Productions are putting on the Shakespeare classic Macbeth, which will take place outdoors with the castle as a backdrop.

The group, which performed Romeo and Juliet at the historic building last year, will help raise funds for Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust, the organisation responsible for protecting the site.

Jacqui Watson, vice chair of the trust, said: "It is lovely to be hosting another performance.

“Hartlebury Castle is a stunning backdrop and the version of Macbeth fits in perfectly with our building's history.”

Heartbreak Production’s original adaptation is set in a rehabilitative hospital in 1919, with a group of shell-shocked soldiers performing the story of Macbeth to ensure the atrocities of war are never forgotten.

This approach, which has been used to mark the centenary of the First World War, is particularly relevant to the setting.

Hartlebury Castle’s stable block was converted into a Red Cross hospital during the Great War and was used to care for wounded soldiers.

This chapter in the castle’s history is documented in three scrapbooks containing messages, photos and memorabilia from soldiers who recovered at Hartlebury, which are now displayed in the castle’s Hurd Library collection.

The performance of Macbeth will start at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. Visitors should bring picnic rugs, chairs and food, or can buy refreshments on site.

Tickets cost £13 for adults and £7 for concessions, and are available from Worcestershire County Museum on 01299 250416.
