AN 18th century sensation is to be the next theatre show for the Nonentities at Kidderminster's Rose Theatre.

August Strindberg’s famous Miss Julie, translated by Michael Meyer, is the amateur dramatic society's next play in the exciting and welcoming Rose Theatre Studio.

Miss Julie is the count’s heiress, and after the recent failure of her engagement, is bored and at a loose-end on the traditional party time of midsummer’s evening. Very soon, the count’s valet, well-travelled, well-mannered and well-read, and with an eye to the main chance, and Julie, are immediately and strongly attracted. Their relationship rapidly escalates and a horrifying climax is the tragic and inevitable conclusion of their short and tempestuous relationship.

An outrageous and notorious sensation when written, Strindberg was unable to find a theatre that would stage it, even though he considered it was his finest work. Manners, fashions and morals change, but the play has still the power to surprise, and possibly to still shock and startle.

The play runs from Monday until Saturday, November 9 to 14, at 7.30 each evening, in The Rose Theatre Studio, Broadwaters, Kidderminster.

Tickets are priced at £9.50 on Monday, £10.50 Tuesday until Thursday, and £11 on Friday and Saturday, and are available in person from The Theatre Box Office by telephone on 01562 743745 or on-line from rosetheatre.co.uk.
