THE UK amateur premiere of “Muddy Cows” kicks off at the Rose Theatre for a set of sporting fixtures.

This new and realistically observed comedy – by John Godber – centres on a female amateur rugby team “Scarfield Ladies FC”, as they attempt to prepare for a rugby tournament despite limited resources, lack of kit, poor changing facilities and coping with day to day pressures of their own lives.

Six actors from the theatre have been put through their paces in this multi scene piece, which requires them to depict not only their training sessions but also their social lives as they prepare for the games which will define them as a team.

If this wasn’t a big enough challenge in itself, the second half of the play follows the team as they participate in a gruelling set of matches – getting muddier by the minute.

Katy Ball, who plays Fran the social worker, said: “At a time when equality for women in sports is being heavily discussed, the play does provide a thought provoking look at the struggles faced by a female rugby team, but also their defiance in the face of them.”

Chris Clarke, who is directing the piece, added: “The direction of such a physical piece of theatre in our studio space has been challenging, but the cast and crew have risen brilliantly to the demands and have produced a heart-warming and very funny insight into the trials and tribulations faced by women at amateur level.

“Our audience are in for a few surprises along the way and, of course, the scrum machine scenes and ‘mud fest’ of the later rugby matches themselves are a real testament to the backstage team and their organisation.”

Muddy Cow will be performed at the Rose Theatre tonight (April 14), Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm.
