MUSICAL-theatre lovers can join Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society’s youth section downtown as they perform the mean green musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at the Rose Theatre.

Meet Seymour Krelbourne, played by Josh Haywood, the downtrodden orphan working at Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist. Following a total eclipse, Seymour discovers a completely new species of plant which he names Audrey II, after the co-worker he is secretly in love with.

Alas, Audrey, played by Jessica Brett, already has a boyfriend, the abusive and sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, played by Louis Wharton.

Audrey II doesn’t thrive in the flower shop, but after an accident with a pair of shears, Seymour discovers the secret formula that allows Audrey II to begin to talk, sing and grow to epic proportions.

Little Shop of Horrors is a comedy horror rock musical, by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman based on the low-budget 1960 film. The music includes several well-known tunes, including the title song ‘Skid Row (Downtown)’, ‘Somewhere That’s Green’ and ‘Suddenly, Seymour’.

Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society are celebrating their centenary this year and the youth section has played a big part in it of recent years, with many members starting out in the youth section going on to perform professionally and work in the West End.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ will run at the Rose Theatre in Kidderminster between Thursday, June 16, and Saturday, June 18, from 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday.
