Light scheme for Bewdley bridge
BEWDLEY bridge could be set for a transformation if an offer from a local firm to design lighting for it gets the green light.
The company, which does not yet want to be named, have offered to design and set up the lightning at no cost.
The offer, which also includes technical support during installation and on going maintenance work, will be discussed at the town's council meeting, on March 31, after which full details about the scheme will be released.
If the scheme gets the go-ahead, the lights will be placed underneath the bridge creating a reflection into the river.
Bewdley Mayor, Anne Mace, said: "The firm can't put the lights anywhere but under the bridge because of the flood levels. But I think this will give a better effect.
"It's a listed bridge so we have to get the approval of the conservation officer."
Miss Mace added: "The proposal will be put to the town councillors and then we will start talking to the right people to get it off the ground.
"I'm sure the town council will want to go for it as I think it will be a wonderful thing for Bewdley.
" I have seen some of the schemes the firm has done and they have been done beautifully and sensitively.
"We are so excited by this generous offer which would enhance our wonderful bridge."

This is something I've thought would be good for Bewdley for some time. Telford's bridge is a beautiful piece of history and for it to be illuminated would enable many more people to enjoy its beauty. PS. Get rid of the pigeons at the same time!

Is this going to cost any money? I do not mind Bewdley being made alot more pleasing to the eye but at what expense? Any more information on this?

It is good news that someone has offered to illuminate the bridge. The Town Centre Management Forum have been trying to do this for over 14 years but the problem was funding. The bridge at Worcester is illuminated and it looks fine. However I believe the company who have offered to illuminate our bridge intend to do it a little different. There is a power supply on the bridge and yes there will be a cost due to the electricity used. I have been campagning for this for several years and also for the illumination of the several arches next to the bridge behind the carpet bed and the War Memorial.

An excellent idea - could the cost of running the electricity be reduced by utilising the river's flow to generate power??

Actually hotfuzz that isn't as daft as it sounds. The technology in LED's has advanced significantly recently, that energy from the Severn current at Bewdley could probably be enough. For instance, the LEDs that light up Finnieston Bridge at Pacific Quay, Glasgow only required... "96 watts whereas lighting by traditional sources would require around 500W".

In reply to comments posted on the website, I feel I should bring you up to date on how we are progressing and answer a few queries.
A Town Council working party has now been set up and we are constantly in touch with Light ideas (the company prepared to design and offer the lighting system at an approximate cost to them of £5,000), we also have arranged meetings with the appropriate officers from County and District Council and other appropriate agencies to help get the project started.
Quite rightly, the question ‘How much this is going to cost the people of Bewdley?’ is being asked. Any of the installation charges will be paid for by grants, fund raising, etc. For the electricity costs Light ideas will be using Hunza metal halide luminaries (bulbs to us), each are measured at 20 watts of power and a rough estimate to light the whole bridge amounts to around £120 per year. Monies have been set aside by councils and are available for schemes such as this. We will be looking into energy power (hydro power) and costs.
Another question is, ‘Will the light fittings be seen?’ No, the fittings will be coated in a UV stable aluminium to match with the colour of the masonry and they will be housed under the arches, thus giving a subtle light and effect.
As for the bridge itself, we fully understand the delicacy of working on a grade 1 listed structure and will be sympathetic in the installation. As well as the lights, we are looking into costs of having it cleaned at the same time.
