THE first of four new multi-activity play areas aimed at tacking anti-social behaviour has been opened in Kidderminster.

The facility, in Heronswood Road, Spennells, can be used for activities such as football, basketball and general play for all ages.

It is designed to benefit young people and cost about £45,000. Other play areas are planned for Bewdley Leisure Centre, Areley Kings Recreation Ground and White Wickets in Franche, Kidderminster.

Conservative councillor, Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council's cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: "The new multi-use games area is a fantastic sports facility.

"It will benefit all ages and is part of the council's commitment to not only improve leisure facilities for all in the district but to help tackle anti-social behaviour by providing more facilities that children can use."

He added: "Already, the facility is proving to be a very popular and I am sure that the other three sites proposed across the district will also prove to be a massive success."

This is great news and much welcomed, however, I feel it is not enough to provide the facilities and then just leave it for the locals to get on with it. Back up support is required to provide coaching, training, leagues and matches, otherwise it will be just left to rot and be vandalised.
