Free bus travel to help jobseekers
9:20am Friday 4th January 2013 in News
WYRE Forest residents can take advantage of free bus travel to help them start work more easily this month.
People who hold Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards can travel free on almost every local bus service operated by First, Arriva, Stagecoach, Go-Ahead and National Express (buses) in the initiative.
The five major bus companies in the UK have teamed up in the Bus for Jobs Scheme and Worcestershire County Council has announced the scheme will be extended even further in Worcestershire.
All subsidised bus services operated on behalf of the county council have also been instructed to accept the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card. Other commercial operators, Whittles and Johnson's, have also agreed to accept the cards.
That means that in Worcestershire, almost 90 per cent of bus services will accept the card and permit free travel for those seeking employment, supporting the county council's Open for Business corporate objective.
The intention of the scheme, which is being run nationally, is to enable people to travel around more easily in search of employment, to job interviews with prospective employees and to and from training courses.
A valid Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card must be produced when the journey is made. Anyone unable to show their card at the time of travel will not be able to make the journey without payment of the appropriate fare.
The scheme is being administer by Jobcentre Plus. For more information about how to obtain a Travel Discount card contact a local Jobcentre Plus Office.
