Stourport Fairgrade group receive grant
7:30am Sunday 20th January 2013 in News
A STOURPORT Fairtrade group is celebrating after receiving a £923 grant to help run activities in Fairtrade Fortnight.
The Midcounties Co-operative gave the grant to help Stourport Town Fairtrade Group.
Derek Wood, chairman of the group said: “The grant will enable us to promote a number of projects including wide circulation of a newsletter and work with primary schools in the town.
“The primary schools involved will take part in the Rice Game and will aim to sell rice grown in Malawi. Every 90 kilos of rice sold will enable a student in Malawi to attend secondary school.”
The Stourport group will be using the money to host a coffee morning at the Oasis Coffee Bar on Saturday, March 2 and a Fairtrade fashion show at Stourport High School on Thursday, March 7.
Maxine Sharman, community manager at the Midcounties Co-operative, said: “We are delighted to be be able to award this grant to Stourport Town Fairtrade Group and to support them in the work they are doing to promote Fairtrade in their community.
“Giving back to the communities where we trade is important to us as we believe in putting our co-operative values and principles into action.”
The fund has been created from share accounts and will make grants twice a year working with Worcestershire Community Foundation.
