Blockbuster in Stourport set to close
11:27am Monday 21st January 2013 in News
BLOCKBUSTER in Stourport is among the 129 stores set to close after the company went into adminstration.
A spokesman for administrators Deloitte said the High Street store is on the list of store closures but the number of jobs at risk could not be specified.
Roughly five people work in each Blockbuster store and staff affected in the closing stores will be facing redundancy.
Deloitte confirmed plans on Saturday that 129 out of 528 of the DVD rental stores would close over the coming weeks.
Customers will be notified in advance of closure so that they can return their outstanding rental items beforehand.
Blockbuster, which employs 4,190 members of staff, went into adminstration last Wednesday following increased competition from the internet.
Lee Manning, joint administrator, said: “Having reviewed the portfolio with management, the store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold.
“We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time. We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support.”
Blockbuster in Kidderminster at Crossley Retail Park is not among the stores set to close.

Not a great loss, i always end up going to the kidderminster store even though i live in stourport as there is a lot more choice and the staff are a lot more friendly.
Anyways, so now Stourport will become worse. Only food shops and charity shops. Think I'll stick to online stores.

The Stourport store always seems really busy to me. Maybe there is still a chance to save it, if it is viable locally, even if a local entrepeneur takes it over as an independent video/games store?
