Councillor Campion takes on county adult social care responsibility

Councillor Campion to take on Worcestershire adult social care responsibility Councillor Campion to take on Worcestershire adult social care responsibility

A WYRE Forest-based Worcestershire County Council cabinet member will take on the role of adult social care across the county.

Conservative councillor Phillip Gretton has announced he will be stepping down as cabinet member for adult social care.

Council leader, Conservative Adrian Hardman, said following the decision, the number of cabinet members on the council would be reduced to nine and Conservative councillor John Campion would combine the role with his current duties as cabinet member for localism and communities.

Mr Campion, also leader of Wyre Forest District Council, said: “Philip has done an excellent job for the people of the county and I would like to recognise his great service.

“He leaves the adult social care service in good shape and while there are many challenges ahead, I will be looking to continue to do the best I can for the service.

“His legacy is of good, sound and solid decision-making and I hope to emulate his leadership for the benefit of residents across the county.”

Mr Gretton, an accountant by profession, has held the cabinet position for the last eight years.

Mr Hardman added: “Philip decided after eight years in office he did not intend to continue holding responsibility for adult social care, even if re-elected in May.

“So he and I agreed an early handover would help to provide continuity in this important role.”

Congratulations John. A well deserved appointment in recognition for all you have done for Kidderminster Library. I will be voting for you in just a few weeks.

John Campion in charge of Adults Social Care - gawd help us, things just go from bad to worse.

He'll also have responsibility now for the care staff he's worked so hard to place in the Library. Something of a reward it would seem for being His Masters Voice and betraying the cultural integrity and people of Wyre Forest.

It's all so clear to me now.............

A little less time available for him to oversee the regeneration of Wyre Forest... mind you perhaps that will be a GOOD thing. Still, with Clee making a comeback in May hell soon not be leader of WFDC.

Too many portfolios, can't see how anyone can commit a reasonable amount of effort. This remit is a large one and should not be combined with other posts or go to those who are heavily involved in other areas. To me this shows how little the WCC leader understands about the adult social care service.

Worries me because it is a full time job!

Horrifying. Looks like the deconstruc tion of our vocabulary and services. Awaiting the redefinition of 'think' ,'local',
'community','adult',
'social' and 'service'.
Collecting portfolios would appear a profitable leisure pursuit, though one fears where it is leading if such a portfolio is so casually combined. A structural poverty In community leadership and development.

I thought Cllr Campion was to be Mayor of Kidderminster next year. Ann Hingley was made to stand down from her Cabinet position when she became Mayor. Surely the same will apply to Cllr Campion and his positions on both the County Council Cabinet and the District Council Cabinet? I have to say I would find the concentration of positions of authority in so few hands worrying whatever the political party.

Anyone know if Cllr Campion actually has a proper job or does he make a healthy living from our taxes?

He's a dedicated, full time councillor who works all year round, not just at election time! My nan thinks he's a lovely man.

If Campion becomes Mayor of Kiddy next year and retains both the enhanced portfolio at County and Leader at Wyre Forest it will be a total disgrace and sham. He doesn't work he is paid out of the local authority purse at something like £50k a year- He did once work in a failed TV business which went bankrupt putting people out of work. I remember the headlines which said he was entering local politics because of the fact his company had been robbed so many times.
The hours requires for leading the District are really full times, and so definitely are the County Jobs. I suppose if he takes on these rols and say a new adult learning centre is opened in Kiddy, he will save money as he will be there in three roles, Mayor WF Leader and Portfolio at County.
When Howard Martin was Mayor of Kiddy Campion told him he shoukd step down as leader of HC. That was a far less important role than these so lets hope he goes from one of them.

Conflicts of interest abound in this district. And political greed. Both power & remuneration. That is all.

I agree with Fran on this point - this is a full time job and a job which is protecting vunerable people and you cannot deal with that role alongside your cabinet position for localism and communities just on WCC side.
On the WFDC side he also the leader of Wyre Forest which again is a full time role or certainly cannot be done with being responsible for 2 roles at county level.
He also wants to be Mayor next year - is that a Saturday job then for him??
