Speed limit to be enforced on A451

SPEEDING drivers will be stopped in their tracks when a new mobile camera site is launched on a busy Kidderminster road.

The speed cameras will be set up on the A451 Stourbridge Road in the Broadwaters area following concerns from worried residents about fast traffic.

Some drivers are speeding at more then 10 miles over the 30mph speed limit, according to speed data figures and It is hoped the mobile cameras will slow them down.

The enforcement site has been launched by the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia and the cameras are due to be set up by tomorrow.

It forms part of the partnership’s community concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement.

Local residents raised their concerns about the speed of traffic through their local policing team at a PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting, prompting the partnership to take action.

Anna Higgins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “We are launching a new community concern enforcement site on the A451 Stourbridge Road to address the concerns that have been raised with us by the local community.

“The speed data we collected in the area highlighted unacceptably high speeds - at least seven out of ten drivers are exceeding the speed limit and 15 per cent of vehicles travel above 40.8mph.

“We hope that the new site will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed. This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in the area and improve the safety of the road for all those who use it.”

The new site will be operational for at least six months and data will be collected during that time to assess the impact on traffic speed and driver behaviour.

"Some drivers are speeding at more then 10 miles over the 30mph speed limit" & "seven out of ten drivers are exceeding the speed limit and 15 per cent of vehicles travel above 40.8mph".

Would this be the stretch just off the island that used to be a 40 by any chance??

wonder why 7 out of 10 are doing roughly 40.

Remember when we used to have 40's (apart from now seen on most duel carriageways) and remember when we used to have nationals (being replaced by stealth to 50's & 40's)

Maybe theyve realised they havent had any money from the camera they put up by the park since it was set on fire and its time for revenue plan b?

If it is where you describe Mr Fie, then it's on the widest, safest piece of road in Kidderminster.

This is the problem when people complain about cars being driven too quickly - those complaining are usually worried about the actually very rare occasions when someone breaks the speed limit by 20, 30 or even 40 miles an hour, or just drives past very noisily, pedal to the metal. Those being complained to hear "exceeding the speed limit" and have to be seen to be doing something.

Im scared it is.. but nothing surprises me with the normal road related decissions around here. "Wide & Safe" translation around here is "wide enough to be narrowed".

Also, I live in Broadwaters and wasn't aware of the PACT meeting taking place. Think I may have to pull my head out a bit more and find out some info to start going. It would be interesting to know the 'demographic' of the people who complained at the pact.

The fixed speed camera was apparantly put up due to resident concerns though I have yet to encounter someone that asked for it.

Why is it 'Speed' always attacked (and usually in a questionable location.. run out of town before limit change, road with a recently lowered limit)

Commence the.. "Speed is a contributing factor in accidents and if it saves one life its worth it" .. Speed is a contributing factor of everything that moves.
(a response that frustrates me as much as "if i havent got anything to hide why should it bother me")

I dont agree with the rampant abuse of speed cameras, especially run with private initiatives etc that rely on such revenue to fund their activities.

If 70% of vehicles are breaking the speed limit could that be a democratic way of deciding the speed limit is too low for that stretch of road?
I've hated speed cameras ever since being done at 3mph over the limit & then having to tell 3 different insurance companies about my recklessness to be charged over £100 per vehicle due to being a higher risk . Just a money making racket.

So, on that basis, if 70% of people run out of the shop having left 1p on the counter, stuff is too expensive???!!!

The problem is the halfwits who think they can drive at these speeds, and those who don't even know the rules of the road. Probably too many big words in the highway code for them!!!

Eg. - Overtaking in a 30mph residential area. Generally driving in built up areas at over 30mph. Old folk who just cannot bear to be overtaken in their Mercs, so they floor it all over the place!

Wake up you morons!

Speed limits are like Marmite. You love 'em or hate 'em. I try to abide by the arbitrary speed limits set by some faceless administrator in a remote office.
Why are local residents not consulted? Not just those who live on a particular stretch of road but those who use it as well. We know our own localities.
There are cynical people in authority who can smell a 'cash cow'. Safety is the excuse and covers a myriad of reasons why we should be milked.
We need more democracy or the names of the responsible people who propose these 'out of the air' ideas. No-one will own up to having a dead brain when deciding unsuitable limits.

Since the main roadway through Broadwaters from roundabout near the Rose theatre to the roundabout by Chapel Hill is the A449, what do they mean by A451 Broadwaters area?

@Mr Fie - The next PACT meeting for Broadwaters is Monday 10 June at St Mary's School at 7.00pm. I, for one, would certainly welcome a more representative cross section of the area attending. PACT meetings are not well advertised and it is a shame because they do give local residents a big input to addressing local issues with police and other agencies.
