Family of canal death girl 'devastated'

THE family of a six-year-old girl who died after she fell into a canal in Kidderminster are “absolutely devastated”.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Springfield Park - near the Wolverley Court Lock - just before 6.20pm last night following reports three children had fallen into the canal.

It appears two of the children managed to get themselves out of the water but the third child was in the water for some time before being rescued.

The three children were all rushed to hospital but the six-year-old was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The two other children are expected to make a full recovery.

Spt Kevin Purcell, police commander in north Worcestershire, said: “Our investigation into this tragic incident is continuing this morning and we are working hard to establish exactly how the girl came to be in the water.

“The family of the six-year-old are absolutely devastated by their loss and I would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.

“Out of respect for the dead girl’s family, we will not be confirmed her identity at this early stage but there may be further updates later in the day.

“At the present time there is nothing further we can add about this matter.”

What a terrible loss to this family, my heart goes out to them.
I used to be an avid narrowboater and on many occassions found children and teenagers around this lock and always dreaded an emergency there because it is so isolated, although so near to urban areas. At this time of the year there are not many boat movements or people walking the towpath.
All children are drawn to water and I suspect it will always be so. As a child in the country my parents made sure that I knew the dangerous parts but we always swam in the brooks.
Just one thought, why was she taken to a Birmingham hospital and not immediately to Primary Care at Kidderminster, and isn't this a solid case for bringing back A & E to Kidderminster Hospital ?
RIP young lady.

My thoughts go out to the family of this child. I can't imagine the pain they must be feeling. RIP.

Not a case for A and E at Kidderminster. Birmingham is the major trauma centre!

Sorry Fran Ob, you are just plain wrong on this one. As a former Emergency Service Officer I advise you that the first few minutes in any emergency are the most important and decisions taken at that time are probably the most important in respect of the future of any victim. The medical profession used to refer to that time as" the golden hour".
Having worked closely with the Doctors on the !BASICS" scheme I came to understand that assessment and care at the scene was vitally important. KGH is within 10 minutes of Wolverley Court Lock whereas Birmingham Childrens Hospital is at least 30 minutes by Helicopter and up to 45 minutes by road, given a clear run. If the patient is in deep trauma then the time saved is invaluable.
The reason that A & E was taken from KGH (and now from Redditch Alexandra) is purely financial, which again is purely down to senior mismanagement.
