MORE than 60 bereaved children, young people and their families have been supported so far through a service launched by a Kidderminster charity.

Generous Shuttle readers have helped collect nearly £30,000 in 30 weeks for Kemp Hospice’s Kemp for Kids – with more funds raised still to be counted. Those participating in Kemp’s Midnight Walk on Saturday, June 22, will also be able to donate specifically to the appeal.

During the 30-week campaign, support has been provided to 61 youngsters in need of help, thanks to 460 one-to-one sessions.

A residential weekend has also been held. Some 23 children and young people and eight parents spent two days at the Pioneer Centre, Cleobury Mortimer, taking part in therapeutic work, confidence and self-esteem building.

Staff at a number of Wyre Forest primary schools have been trained in child bereavement by the Kemp team, to equip them with the skills necessary to support children within their school.

A youth forum has also been set up for pupils from Wolverley Secondary School, Baxter College and King Charles I School to help shape and develop the service, as well as help with fundraising events.

The Kidderminster-based charity has also recruited and trained 24 volunteers to work with children and families. Many of these volunteers helped run the residential weekend.

Jackie Turner, Kemp children’s and young people’s worker, said: “The support we have received from the local community is incredible.

“Whether it’s donating items we have needed for the residential weekend, holding fund-raising events or volunteering, we wouldn’t have been able to help as many children and young people as we have.

“On behalf of myself, the team at Kemp Hospice and the bereaved children, I would like to give you all a very heart-felt thank you.”

Kemp will continue to run the children’s bereavement service throughout Wyre Forest. For more donation information, call Kemp on 01562 756000.
