A BEANO and Marvel comics illustrator will be drawing on his experience when he teaches a masterclass to budding artists at a Stourport school.

Kev Sutherland will be visiting St Wulstan’s Catholic Primary school next Wednesday as part of stationery manufacturer Berol by Paper Mate’s initiative to get kids creating.

Mr Sutherland is a comic-strip artist, writer, producer and comedian, who has produced work for the Beano comics, the cult classic Doctor Who Adventures and Marvel comics as well as appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Veronica Salacinski, year six teacher at St Wulstan’s, won the top prize for her school by entering a competition on the Berol Creative Club’s facebook page.

During the two-hour comic art masterclass the youngsters will write and draw their own comic book adventure story with the help of Mr Sutherland, who will also draw a unique caricature for each pupil to treasure.

Ms Salacinski said: “We have some young budding artists at our school so it’s a great opportunity to have a talented illustrator come in to the classroom to inspire them to be creative in different ways and develop new skills.

“The children work extremely hard during the year and deserve this reward as a thank you for their fantastic efforts.”

Claire Dudley, Berol by Paper Mate’s marketing manager, said: “Kev is a fantastic multi-talented artist and a brilliant personality. Therefore it seemed the perfect partnership to launch our Berol Creative Club competition.

“Art is a fantastic part of the school day for the children to enjoy and express themselves and we are happy to be giving St Wulstan’s Catholic Primary School £1,000 of Berol by Paper Mate products to help the children keep creating for years to come.”
