MEMBERS of the Areley Kings Beavers have been discovering the history of canals at the Stourport Basins.

The education session also helped to teach the children how to keep SAFE which refers to the Stay Away From the Edge safety campaign.

Stourport Forward and the Canal and River Trust held the session with resources specifically developed for Stourport.

The Beavers also took a walk around the basins and watched the boats using the locks.

Jenny Shaw, a volunteer with Stourport Forward’s education team, said: “We feel it’s vital in the Wyre Forest area that children understand the dangers of our rivers, pools and canals.

“Our water safety sessions, which can be delivered in schools and for other organisations, develop awareness of those hazards and how to act if someone does get into difficulties.”

Kelly Darkins, leader of the Beaver group which meets at Areley Kings Scout Hut on Mondays, recognised the importance for children of learning about their local heritage.

She said: “The children asked so many questions. It was good to see the great minds of tomorrow learning from the past.”
