WORCESTERSHIRE County Council has confirmed the date of a by-election, called in Kidderminster following the death of UKIP’s Tony Baker.

Voters in St Mary’s division will go to the polls on Thursday, August 1, to choose who will fill the now vacant seat.

Mr Baker was elected on May 2, 2013, with 595 votes, taking the seat from Conservative Nathan Desmond.

The by-election, however, was called just over a month later, after Mr Baker, 69, died following a cardiac arrest.

It is the second county council by-election to be held in a Wyre Forest division since the 2013 local elections. Yesterday, Stourport voters went back to the polls to fill the seat vacated by former UKIP councillor Eric Kitson, who had resigned following a race-row.

Nominations for the St Mary’s by-election will close on Friday next week. Those wishing to vote by post should apply by Wednesday, July 17 and those wishing to vote by proxy should apply by Wednesday, July 24.
