Kidderminster couple celebrate 60 years
7:10am Thursday 15th August 2013 in News
A KIDDERMINSTER couple are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today.
Walter and Doreen Ashcroft met at the cinema in Kidderminster when they were teenagers and married a year later.
They had three children, Paul, Mary and Peter, who died from Septicaemia at the age of 36. Paul was the couple’s first child and was a Christmas baby.
Mrs Ashcroft, 76, said: “We were having dinner at my mums on Christmas Day and we started walking to Walter’s parents.
“We got as far as Brinton Park and I had stomach ache. I thought it was the sage and onion stuffing.
“When we got to Walter’s mums I wasn’t feeling too well so had a lie down and it was a neighbour who said I was in labour.”
The couple have six grandchildren and three great-grandsons with a great-granddaughter due this month.
Mr Ashcroft, 80, spent 43 years working at Smethwick Drop Forge (SDF), in Stourport Road, and used to go the SDF club with his wife.
Mrs Ashcroft spent two years working at carpet firm Tomkinsons before she had her children. The couple used to go fishing together and have enjoyed holidays together in Great Yarmouth.
Mrs Ashcroft added: “We just work out things if we have arguments and we’ve just got on with things.”
The Ashcrofts will be celebrating their anniversary with friends and family on Saturday.
