Petition to fight TA base closure
HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition against a controversial decision to axe Kidderminster’s Territorial Army(TA) base as part of a major shake-up of UK armed forces.
Some 400 people have put their signatures to the petition after it was announced the Birmingham Road centre was one of 38 military bases set to close under Government reforms announced by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.
The petition was set up last month by Labour Wyre Forest councillor Nigel Knowles, who is a joint Wyre Forest Armed Forces Champion, along with Conservative councillor Nikki Gale.
Mr Knowles is calling for a review of the decision as he fears the closure of the centre would be a “major loss” to the town.
He has been collecting signatures in Kidderminster and Bewdleyand will be in Stourport town centre on Saturday, August 24, at noon.
Mr Knowles said: “People have also been ringing me and asking for petition forms and they are out in the district.
“I’m really very, very pleased that so many people have taken an interest in this. It’s a major community facility. There’s a lot of bad feeling about the closure.”
He added he was hoping to get 1,000 signatures on the petition before handing it to Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier, who told The Shuttle last month that he supported the petition, to take to the Secretary of State.
“The centre is used everyday so where are they going to put all those people?” Mr Knowles said. “It’s in good condition. I think it will cost more to close it down than it would to keep it going. They will lose all that goodwill that’s been with us for hundreds of years.”
He added he believed once closed, the centre would be demolished and replaced by houses.
People can sign the petition by emailing nigelknowlesbewdley@ hotmail.comor calling Mr Knowles on 01299 402343.
