Kidderminster OAP's horror at dishwasher blaze
A KIDDERMINSTER pensioner says he and his wife are “very lucky to still be here” after a dishwasher blaze engulfed their kitchen in smoke and flames.
Ray Manton, 68, said he and wife Carol, 66, had smelt smoke at about 9.15am on Monday at their home in Barnetts Close and opened the kitchen door to discover flames destroying their Bosch Exxcel.
After contacting the home appliances company, Mr Manton discovered the product had been recalled two years ago and has warned other owners they could have a “potentially life-threatening piece of equipment in the house”.
A Bosch spokeswoman said the company had been recalling certain dishwashers, manufactured between 1999 and 2005, since 2011 but customers had not reacted to the campaign “as quickly as anticipated”.
Mr Manton said: “It is a really serious situation – most people will put their dishwasher on and go upstairs to bed, which we do most nights, or go out.
“If we had gone to bed we would be in the morgue by now and if we had gone out it would have been a serious fire so I think people need to be aware of that risk.”
Liz Falconer, group marketing manager for BSH, which owns Bosch, said 632,000 products were initially affected and just 180,000 had been tracked since the recall launch.
“We are doing everything we can – we have contacted all customers who have registered their products and tried to reach customers who have not or have moved into properties where the dishwasher is already there,” she said.
Mr Manton said the fire and rescue service attended and the blaze lasted about 15 minutes. The front of the dishwasher has been destroyed and surfaces and the floor in his kitchen damaged. A repair man was due to visit his house on Tuesday to replace the product.
