Stourport sports clubs given funding to improve facilities
6:40am Wednesday 21st August 2013 in News
TWO Stourport sports clubs have been given funding by Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Fund to improve facilities.
Stourport Tennis and Squash Club have been given £50,000 and Stourport Bowling Green Club received £36,365 as part of £1.8 million shared out by Sport England.
Chairman of Stourport Tennis and Squash Club Sue Cox said: “It’ll make a huge difference. We’ve got two old tennis courts and now we can put flood lighting on those courts and re-do the surfaces.
“The money from Sport England is going to mean that we will have six courts rather than four courts. We can use the two extra courts for coaching juniors.
“It’s the second time that we’ve asked for the money but this time we were supported by MP Mark Garnier, councillors and local people have signed a petition.
“It’s quite hard work and you have to show the community supports you.”
The extra space will also help the club engage with Stourport primary schools.
Sport England will be extending the legacy fund until 2017 and has committed an additional £40 million National Lottery money.
Minister for Sport Hugh Robertson said: “This £40 million injection of National Lottery funding will be a huge boost to local sports facilities across the country.”
Bids will be accepted for the next round of funding from the Monday, October 21. To find out more visit sportengland.org/inspiredfacilities
