Kidderminster trolley dash brothers taste sweet success
A NEW discount store in Kidderminster opened with a ferocious trolley dash by two Bewdley brothers trying to break a world record.
Nathan, eight, and Daniel Wallis, 10, scooped a total of 112 items between them in 99 seconds as they marked the opening of the 99p Stores, at the Swan Centre’s former Boots store, last Saturday.
Their attempt was short of the 267-item world record they were aiming for but, after sharing their haul, the brothers now have enough sweets to last until Christmas.
Nathan and Daniel won a competition earlier this month to qualify for the dash.
Nadir Lalani, 99p Stores owner and chief executive, said: “They did well – it was the best trolley haul I have ever seen from children.”
He added that within the first hour of the store opening, more than 850 shoppers had poured through the doors.
Throughout the day mascot “Mr 99p” gave away balloons to children and hosted games with customers.
Nathan and Daniel’s mum, Emma Wallis, 35, said: “It was a great day – the boys had a blast.”
About 30 new jobs have been created with the £250,000 opening of the shop. The former Boots store was left empty earlier this year after the health and beauty retailer moved to Weavers Wharf.
