Medal back with Kidderminster soldier's family

THE daughter of a First World War soldier whose medal featured on The Shuttle’s front page last week said it was “emotional” to have it returned to her family.
Jean Worboys, 75, has been given the medal belonging to her father Private Percy John Harrison after it was found in the Habberley Valley area by Linda Woods’ metal-detecting brother William Rook.
Mrs Woods appealed through The Shuttle to find Mr Harrison’s family as it is the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War next year.
Mrs Worboys, of Kidderminster, said: “It was quite emotional really because I had no idea about it. I was eight when my father died. My memories of him are very far between. He was in ill health after being gassed during the war.
“It’s lovely to have it and it’s lovely that it’s been found. Linda cleaned it up beautifully.”
Mr Harrison died aged 57 in 1946. He spent three years in the Worcestershire Regiment during the First World War and received the victory medal for his role.
The silver war badge roll shows that he enlisted on September 3 in 1914 but was discharged in July 1917 because of sickness.
He was therefore also given a silver badge to show that he had served and not that he was avoiding military service.
Mrs Worboys added: “All three of my brothers, Cyril, John and Bernard, went to war in 1939 and all three came back. Cyril was a prisoner of war in Germany from 1940 to 1945.”
Mrs Worboys, who is Mr Harrison’s only surviving child, added: “I have no idea what it was doing in Habberley Valley. Maybe one of my brothers took it there and lost it. I believe they used to play over there.”
She has two daughters with husband Henry, singer Claire, who recently played Mary Magdalene in Bewdley’s first Passion Play and Beverley, who lives in Switzerland.
She added: “They’re very taken to it and emotional about it.”
Mrs Woods said: “It was just wonderful to be able to give it to Jean. It was quite an emotional few moments. It made my day. I’m just so pleased it’s back, it’s just lovely.”
