Boyfriend makes movie trailer to pop question
A ROMANTIC boyfriend popped the question to his unsuspecting partner via the big screen as she watched trailers at the cinema.
Mike Marsh, of Kidderminster, proved romance was still alive and kicking as he got down on one knee to surprise his gobsmacked girlfriend Julie Courtney at the Empire Cinema in Rubery.
Mr Marsh, 39, had arranged for a special trailer he had made to be screened before the action-thriller film Elysium, asking his partner of 18 months to marry him.
He had persuaded Miss Courtney, 37, to go to the cinema for a girls’ night out with his sister Annamarie Gibbons and some other family members, while he stayed at home – but he was waiting in the wings at the movie house to pop the question.
“Julie’s very clued up and anything that I tried to plan she would have guessed so I came up with the idea of having it played at the cinema in Rubery,” said Mr Marsh.
“My sister made a trailer for me, with a lot of phrases and photographs, and then we asked the cinema if it was possible to play it during the trailers before Elysium.”
He added: “I went down to the cinema and they played the trailer before the film and then all the lights came on and I walked up to Julie with the ring and she was crying. The audience were clapping and cheering.”
The 30-second trailer included pictures of the couple, including two of Mr Marsh holding a sign saying ‘will you....’ and ‘marry me’.
“It was pretty nerve-wracking,” Mr Marsh, a tattoo artist, said. “I was standing out of sight with the duty manager and he said there were only about 50 or 60 people there, which wasn’t too bad.”
Miss Courtney said “yes” straight away. She added: “It was amazing. In the beginning I didn’t have a clue. It just looked like a normal trailer and then a couple of pictures came on and I thought ‘I think I recognise those pictures’.
“He came walking along the front with the ring. It was really lovely.”
Love blossomed for the couple after Mr Marsh’s previous marriage came to an end about two years ago.
The couple, who were already friends, will tie the knot in November on Mr Marsh’s 40th birthday.
