Wyre Forest MP welcomes latest jobless figures
6:00am Thursday 12th September 2013 in News
WYRE Forest’s MP has welcomed the unemployment figures for August, released by the Office for National Statistics.
The figures show unemployment in Wyre Forest was 4.3 per cent in August, with youth unemployment at 7.2 per cent - its lowest since May, 2010. The number of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) claimants fell by 47 from the previous month and by 174 since August, 2012.
Conservative Mark Garnier said: “This is very heartening news for our constituency and shows that our efforts to get more people into jobs are paying dividends.
“Unemployment in Wyre Forest is over 10 per cent down from the rate I inherited in May, 2010 and, importantly, the number of 18 to 24-year-olds out of employment is nearly 21 per cent down from the time of the last general election.
“Despite the fact that both unemployment and youth unemployment were at their lowest levels since May, 2010, our effort needs to continue.
“This is very good news for those who have recently found jobs and good news for our local economy. However, for those still seeking employment, I will continue pushing for more economic activity, more jobs fairs and more employment opportunities in our constituency.”
Mr Garnier added the jobs figures - “sadly” - came on a day when administrators were appointed at Kidderminster’s Lawrence Recycling.
