Stourport-based Mentor Link appoints first head of fundraising

A STOURPORT-based charity has appointed its first head of fundraising to help raise money to support young people facing difficulties.
George Brown has been given the new post at Mentor Link to build on the charity’s successful lottery funding applications.
Chief executive Andrea Maddocks said: “Mentor Link was fortunate to recently receive Big Lottery Funding which will develop the charity and extend its services over the next five years.
“To ensure that we can maintain and develop our services beyond lottery funding, we recently decided to appoint a head of fundraising whose role will be to raise support and funds from the local community.”
The charity recruits volunteer mentors to support young people who may be facing family breakdown, bereavement, relationship issues, low self-esteem and bullying.
Mr Brown has more than 20 years experience working in the charitable and not-for-profit sector including working for museums and galleries, children’s and adult hospices, Cancer Research and International Development.
He said: “I think it’s brilliant that the lottery has put so much faith and confidence in this organisation and in so doing obviously valuing the work our mentors do with young people. However, we cannot rely purely on this funding and it is my goal to work with the local community to ensure that Mentor Link will continue to deliver the crucial service long beyond lottery funding.
“My first priority is to recruit a team of volunteer fundraisers to help me achieve this and I am keen to hear from people who would like to take up this challenge.”
Volunteers will be asked to spare an hour a week to befriend, support and encourage young males facing issues which are impacting on their education and well-being.
Successful applicants are asked to volunteer for a minimum of six months with all training and travel expenses paid.
