Prolific Kidderminster shoplifter jailed for breaching ASBO
1:45pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
A PROLIFIC Kidderminster shoplifter has been jailed for breaching an Anti Social Behaviour Order which prevented him from going into stores in the town.
Gary Griffin, 34, of Poplar Road, Kidderminster, flouted the ban by going into Debenhams on Weavers Wharf on August 3, from which he stole aftershave. Several weeks later he was also spotted in two other stores.
The two-year ASBO prohibiting Griffin from entering retail premises had been imposed by Kidderminster magistrates in May, 2012.
Griffin admitted theft and breach of the ASBO when he appeared before Kidderminster magistrates last Thursday. He was sentenced to serve a total of 28 days in jail.
PC Andy Forbes of West Mercia Police said: “The ASBO had been imposed by the court due to Griffin’s long record of thefts. Not only did Griffin flout the ban by entering Debenhams, he also stole a bottle of Diesel aftershave worth £47.
“After being identified on CCTV, a couple of weeks later he was identified entering Wilkinson’s and Sainsbury’s.
“We hope this case emphasises that ASBOs are enforced and that breaches are taken very seriously by the police and courts, resulting in custodial sentences being imposed.
“If Griffin is seen in shops within the prohibited area again he is likely face a much longer sentence next time - up to five years in jail.”
