'Amazing' Stourport woman celebrates 100th birthday
7:50am Thursday 3rd October 2013 in News
A STOURPORT woman who is still the first one to dance at a party is celebrating her 100th birthday today.
Gladys Wheal, known as Net, lives in Areley House Care Home in Stourport.
She was born in Burnley in Lancashire in 1913 and moved to Rubery in Worcestershire when she was six and lived in hospital accommodation as her father was a mental health nurse.
She got married to her husband Norman Wheal in March 1935 and they moved to their home in Rubery village.
Mrs Wheal worked at Austin Motors as a sewing machinist and she and her husband moved to Stourport in the late 1970s where she lived in Lickhill Road North.
Mrs Wheal has one son Boyce and a daughter-in-law Trish, who said: “She’s quite amazing. She’s stayed very active.
“She moved into the home when she was 98. We think the care that she’s getting at the home has helped her to reach that age. They give her wonderful care and she loves it there.
“She said 18 months ago that she hadn’t bought us a Christmas present so we could have Areley House when she was gone. She thinks she owns it. She’s quite a character.”
Lisa Cooper, activities co-ordinator at Areley House, said: “At the great age of 100, Net still walks everywhere chatting to everyone, she still enjoys reading the newspaper and at every entertainment event, she is the first one up dancing and singing along to all the songs. Net truly is a lovely lady and is an inspiration to us all.”
Mrs Wheal will be celebrating her birthday with a party at Areley House with her friends, family and staff.
