CENTENARY events marking the First World War in Bewdley will be co-ordinated by a steering group and could include exhibitions, plays, parades and concerts.

Conservative town councillor Julian Phillips and Independent Community and Health Concern’s councillor Derek Killingworth will be writing to all organisations in the town to see if they want to host or organise any events in the next five years.

They will also be inviting organisations to send representatives to the steering group formed by the council so they can work together in planning and promoting events.

Mr Phillips, whose motion to set up the steering group was approved by the council, said: “I’m aware one or two organisations are already planning projects to commemorate the Great War.

“The town council is hoping to assist with the planning and advertising of such projects and, hopefully, engage as many of the town’s organisations as possible to pool resources and ideas to commemorate this important part of our history.

“In Bewdley, we have a wealth of skills, facilities and resources that I am confident will make the local marking of the centenary a very special occasion.”

Mr Killingworth added: “I am pleased that all councillors of all parties supported Julian’s motion.

“Millions of soldiers died during the Great War de - fending freedom and democracy. It is very fitting that all political parties recognise this as we all play our part in democracy.”
