A RAILWAY user group will campaign to get plans for a new train station building and other improvements at Kidderminster back on track.

The Stourbridge Line User Group (SLUG), which covers Kidderminster Station on Comberton Hill, announced the push as part of a programme of campaigns for the new year.

Chairman Rob Hebron referred to plans previously submitted to Network Rail by Worcestershire County Council to build a new terminal building, better bus facilities to improve connections and proposals to install traffic lights at its entrance on Comberton Hill.

The plan was derailed in 2011 when a bid for funding fell through but Mr Hebron said he was confident his group could achieve its aims by laising with the right people, including the county council, rail operator London Midland and Network Rail.

He said: "We think it is a fantastic opportunity, we think there is good patronage at Kidderminster station, a lot of people use it but we feel it needs better facilities.

"The facilities there for changing are very poor, there are no bus shelters for example - it is not as good as it could be. We feel like Kidderminster station should be pushed up the list to where it rightly belongs.

"It is all about laising and proving our point, we are part of the way there and in the long run we are confident we could achieve this because it is something that other people want us to achieve."

The chairman pointed to changing facilities at Stourbridge Station as a good example to follow.

Members will also call for evening and Sunday trains to stop at Hartlebury, as they try to build on last year's success in getting operator London Midland's services to call at the station regularly during the day.

Mr Hebron said: "We will now concentrate on trying to get evening and Sunday trains to call at Hartlebury. There is a long way to go but I believe SLUG can persuade train operators London Midland to focus on Stourbridge line stations and improvements which can maximise patronage."
