WORCESTERSHIRE is set for more unsettled weather this week – but river levels have at last begun to fall.

Over the weekend, four flood warnings were removed from the river Severn but the river remains under flood alert, meaning flooding is possible and to be prepared.

As your Worcester News went to press, two flood warnings remain in place for Court Meadow, Kempsey and Callow End and Hanley Road, Upton-upon-Severn.

In Upton, the B4211 Hanley Road and New Street remain closed due to flooding.

Dave Throup, Environment Agency manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said they had been able to open one of the flood gates in Upton-upon-Severn, at Dunns Lane, yesterday.

“The levels are still very high but they will slowly recede,” he said.

“We had the peak at Worcester on Friday afternoon and into Saturday.

“We’re not forecasting any more significant rain until later on this week so that will allow the rivers time to drop off a bit."

But despite river levels receding, the Quay restaurant, on the South Quay, in Worcester, is still closed after high river levels forced it to shut on January 2.

Consultant chef Martin Lovell said they hoped to open as soon as possible but feared the damage could be quite bad.

“The water went in on Thursday morning, it’s going to be a bit of a mess in there,” he said.

“We’re going to re-evaluate next week. It just comes up through the floors.

“It may have affected the bar and the carpets. There will be a lot of things that will have to be replaced.

“We are hoping to re-open as soon as possible but we want to be sure the river is not going to come up again.”

There were icy conditions on the county’s roads yesterday after a hard frost overnight.

A vehicle in Lower Wyche Road, Malvern, left the road at about 10am due to icy conditions and caused minor damage to a nearby driveway but police said there were no injuries.

The Met Office is forecasting a mostly dry morning today with sunny spells but showers will become more frequent and occasionally heavy during the afternoon and evening with a maximum temperature of 9C.
