A SHORT-break unit in Kidderminster for children with learning disabilities and types of autism is to remain open despite being under-used.

Worcestershire County Council has agreed not to transfer the youngsters who use Moule Close to a unit in Providence Road, Bromsgrove, following a consultation with parents , children, staf f and other partners .

The authority carried out a review on how short breaks for children with disabilities were provided across the county as part of its council’ s Future Fit programme .

The review aimed to ensure there was the right balance of types of short breaks for children and young people so their families could have a break from caring responsibilities .

The county council’ s cabinet decided against the original proposal of transferring the children who use Moule Close during a meeting last Thursday.

The proposal was considered inappropriate due to the increased risk of disruptive behaviour in children with autism if they were moved and the pressure it would have on families and carers .

Conservative councillor Liz Eyre , cabinet member for children and families , said: “This was a very difficult consultation as the proposals affected three groups of very vulnerable children – those with physical disabilities, on the autistic spectrum accessing supporting units and vulnerable children living out of county .

“We have consulted extensively on this review , extended the consultation period and listened very carefully to all the families .

“The support shown for the two units by parents has been appropriate and significant.”
