THE Stourport Workmen's Club has raised £2,000 to help fund research into Alzheimer’s.

The money was raised through donations and a formal charity dance and auction at the private members club, in Lickhill Road.

Club members have also been putting money into a bottle on the bar and taking a gift from a charity table in return for a donation.

Committee member Mary Russell said: "You see lots of charity shops for animals and cancer but you don't see any for Alzheimer's so we thought we'd make it the club charity."

Her husband, club secretary Danny Russell, said: "We feel it needs the money. The sooner there is a cure, the better."

The Shadows tribute band Out of the Shadows performed at the charity evening, which was attended by about 120 people.

All money raised will go to Alzheimer's Research UK and the club hope to put on a charity night each year to raise additional funds.

Mrs Russell added: "Everyone loved it. Hopefully we'll get more people coming next time."
