CAMPAIGNERS went bananas in Kidderminster to win a better deal for farmers in the developing world during Fairtrade Fortnight.
More than 100 people signed a petition urging the Government to intervene in the supermarket price war, which, it is claimed, is driving down the price paid and trapping banana growers in poverty.
The town’s Fairtrade Group also ran information stalls at the Rowland Hill Shopping Centre, Sainsbury’s, which sells only Fairtrade bananas, and Kidderminster College.
Traidcraft items were sold, banana recipes and quiz sheets dished out and eight-year-old Charlotter Booth, of Gould Avenue East, won a Fairtrade treasure hunt and a £10 Sainsbury’s voucher.
Kidderminster Fairtrade Group chairman Sue Cowen said: “Our efforts received considerable support from members of the public and, hopefully, we will have raised awareness of Fairtrade and some of the issues, like the banana price war.”
