A GILBERT and Sullivan musical set in the Tower of London in the 16th century will be performed by the Great Witley Operatic Society.

The Yeomen of the Guard, brought to you by the same team that produced last year's Oklahoma!, will be performed at the Swan Theatre in Worcester from Tuesday to next Saturday.

Yeomen is full of humour and witty one-liners, with merry melodies, heart-rending tunes and stirring music that many think ranks among Gilbert and Sullivan’s best shows.

Colonel Fairfax, a handsome and brave soldier, is held in the tower under sentence of death on a false charge of sorcery, brought by a malicious cousin, who inherits if Fairfax dies unmarried.

Fairfax plans to thwart his cousin by marrying any girl willing to marry a man about to die. A girl is found and she secretly marries Fairfax. Great Witley Operatic Society is an amateur society which has its origins in Great Witley but now attracts members from a wide area of Worcestershire.

They stage an annual production each Spring, usually at the Swan Theatre in Worcester and also perform concerts in the summer to raise money for charities.

The company's repertoire includes musical theatre, mainly Gilbert and Sullivan shows, grand opera and light opera.

The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid, is a Savoy Opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W S Gilbert. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre on October 2, 1888.
